Rattan vs. Wicker — Understanding the Difference

Wicker is actually not a material, but an ancient technique used to make items from natural materials, such as willow, rush, and rattan core. The natural materials are dampened with water so that they can be easily woven to create rattan-style furniture using the “wicker” weaving technique. It’s an interesting but important distinction.

Rattan-style furniture made with natural fibers will fade if left exposed to sunlight. As a result, natural rattan furniture is better suited for indoor use. Poly rattan furniture (which is what we sell here at Green Acres) is strong and, when properly cared for, will last you an incredibly long time. It is not susceptible to rust like iron garden furniture or mold as with natural rattan.

Natural or synthetic rattan could both be categorized as “wicker,” if woven in the appropriate style — our resin rattan furniture is considered “wicker style” because it is woven in this way, only not with a natural fiber traditionally associated with wicker patio furniture.
